Sydney-based apprentice Chad Schofield blew most punters out of the Caulfield quadrella on outsider Red Typhoon, his first winner in Victoria.
Schofield, 18, is the son of Hay List’s regular rider Glyn Schofield and he decided to experience riding in Melbourne while senior jockeys dominate the Sydney carnival.
At Caulfield on Saturday he finished second on $2.25 favourite Alezan Thunder in Melbourne’s Greatest Ever Easter Egg Hunt Handicap (1100m) and had two unplaced rides on Avionics and Rescue Mission before landing the last race, the Amelia’s Story Handicap (1700m).
“Before this ride I had a really disappointing day so it is good to get a winner and make amends,” said Schofield, who is apprenticed to David Payne.
Trained by Robert Smerdon, Red Typhoon settled in the last three in the 16-horse field and amazed Schofield with her finishing burst.
“She switched off at the back there and really surprised me how well she quickened through the field,” Schofield said.
“She really accelerated through the line.”
Red Typhoon scored by a length from Secret Liaison and The New Boy.
